The Joke

Every day is a toil and grind
All it costs is your body and your mind
When I was young my teacher told me a joke
It went “what do you want to be?”
I didn’t get it, so I laughed to be polite
As the comic made a note for parent-teacher night
Your sense of wonder in the world goes away
Replaced by fear, despair, and dismay at the decay
Decay! Hahaha!
[instrumental bit. time signature changes and what not]
Every day is a toil and a grind
All it costs is your body and your mind
Every night is another chance to fail
Tell us lies, tell us that we might prevail
Some family lived down the street from me
We used to visit every day after school
Did we drift apart when we moved away?
Or, was it when I started listening to what they'd say?
Your sense of wonder in the world goes away
Replaced by fear, despair, and dismay at the decay
Every day is a toil and a grind
All it costs is your body and your mind
Every night is another chance to fail
Tell us lies, tell us that we might prevail
Every day another chance to make things right
Every hour still alive is out of spite
Every minute spent with you goes far too fast
Every second is bound to be our last

Everything I wanted to do I've tried
Everyone I've ever known has died
Walking around the cretaceous with nothing but my pride
Everyone I've loved has lied
And so have I
So have I
Everything I wanted to do I've tried
Everyone I've ever known has died
Walking around the cretaceous with nothing but my pride
Everyone I've loved has lied
And so have I
So have I
It's hard to think when you're extinct
It's such a shame: every day is the same
Even in death I'll take away your breath
Bones in a museum.
Haven't you seen 'em?

Imaginary Larry and Imaginary Harry had a nonexistent friend called Imaginary Berry
and Imaginary Berry and Imaginary Terry had a nonexistent son
Imaginary Glen met a friend named Imaginary Brenda then
Imaginary Glen became Imaginary Glenda
Imaginary Berry got very very scary at Imaginary Terry and
Glenda moved away
And then Glenda got with Brenda and the two of them moved into an hacienda
Imaginary Terry and Imaginary Berry had a threesome with Imaginary Larry then
Imaginary Berry and Imaginary Larry ran away together and bought themselves a dairy
Imaginary Terry moved to the prairie, started drinking sherry…
In the city sitting on the subcommittee
An agenda made by Glenda who is now engaged to Brenda
They sold the hacienda for a cabin in the woods
They're moving to the woods
FIVE YEARS AFTER THAT
Lonely Berry still getting over Larry calls Glenda on the phone as a sort of hail mary
The news was varied: Brenda has miscarried.
But he never found out.
She did not pick up

In the middle of the street (at night) there's a dark the light won't touch
Shadows know your name
Street lights fade away diving home at 5 AM.
5 AM
In the seat behind your own (careful) there's a friend who had too much.
Have to take them home.
People fade away driving home at 5 AM.
5 AM.
I don't know...
I know
I don't know...
Who you
I don't know...
Will be
I don't know...
Some day
I don't know...
I know
I don't know...
Who you
I don't know...
Think you
I don't know...
Will be
You will fade away driving home at 5 AM.
5 AM.
Grab two hours sleep (lights out) to put in another shift.
Bills consume your life.
Money fades away driving home at 5 AM.
5 AM.
I don't know...
I know
I don't know...
Who you
I don't know...
Think you are
I don't know...
I know
I don't know...
Who you
I don't know...
Think you will be some day
In the middle of the street (at night) there's a dark the light won't touch
Shadows know your name
Street lights fade away diving home at 5 AM.
5 AM
